I am an openly gay man.
Some of my loudest support today comes from Muslims. Prayers, kindness, encouragement, every single day. Meanwhile some people who still carry my old faith tell me I am going to hell.
Somebody sold us a story about our neighbors, and it was built to keep us afraid of each other. Real conversation is how we take that story apart.
Jessica McDonald started studying the Quran in public because of the Islamophobia she watched spread through her own state. I wrote a book called Are We Done Yet? about learning to stop looking away and start loving the neighbors right in front of me. Together, we engage in honest conversations about the Bible and Quran, sacred texts, empathy in our daily lives and faith.
